The MAF sensor measures the air drawn in by the engine: as it ages it underestimates the flow and the ECU meters the fuel badly. It is one of the most frequent causes of loss of power and smoke on diesels.
Typical symptoms
- Loss of power above a certain rpm
- Black smoke under acceleration
- Rising consumption
- Intermittent limp mode
- Fault codes P0100-P0103
The quick test
With the engine running you can unplug the MAF sensor connector: if performance improves noticeably, the sensor was providing a wrong value. It is an indicative test, to be confirmed by comparing the measured air flow with the expected value in diagnosis.
Causes of failure
- Poor-quality or badly fitted air filter
- Oil from a performance filter contaminating the element
- Oil vapours from the crankcase breather
- Humidity and ageing of the sensor
Cleaning or replacement
Cleaning with a product specific for MAF sensors can recover a dirty sensor; if the value stays out of specification, it must be replaced with a quality part.
How MasterTuning helps
We check the component with real measurements, not by elimination: flow rates, pressures, corrections and signals read directly from the ECU. We repair, replace and recalibrate the software when needed. Centres throughout Italy.

Frequently asked questions
Can you drive with the MAF sensor unplugged?
For short stretches in an emergency yes, with the ECU using substitute values, but it is not a solution: consumption and emissions get worse.
How do you tell if the MAF sensor needs changing?
By comparing the measured air flow with the expected value at the reference rpm: if the deviation is wide, the sensor is out of specification.
Does cleaning the MAF sensor work?
On dirty sensors yes, using a specific product. A damaged element cannot be recovered.
