P0299 — Turbocharger: underboost condition

Severity: Serious Can you drive? With caution: limp mode possible, have it checked soon Make: All makes (OBD-II standard)
MeaningThe turbo is not producing the pressure the ECU expects. This is the classic sudden power-loss code: the car drives, but feels like half an engine.
FamilyPowertrain (P)

Typical symptoms

Clear power loss, often above 2,000 rpm
Limp mode
Whistle or hiss from the engine bay
Black smoke under acceleration

Common causes

Leak in the hoses or intercooler
Variable geometry seized with soot
Faulty actuator (vacuum or electric)
Dirty boost pressure sensor
Worn turbine

What to do

Look for the air leak before suspecting the turbo: a loose hose or cracked intercooler gives the same code at a fraction of the cost. Then check the variable geometry moves freely by commanding it from the diagnostic tool.
