WHAT IS ECU REMAPPING?
Most modern vehicles contain an ECU (engine control unit), which is effectively a small computer that controls how the engine runs.
Manufacturers tune the engine by loading a DEFAULT software onto the ECU.
This is because manufacturers sell their cars all over the world, so the software settings on the ECU have to account for different climates, laws and restrictions, and for varying fuel quality.
Remapping a vehicle is essentially the modification of the factory DEFAULT software of the vehicle.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Remapping replaces the default software on the ECU, overwriting it with new software that can be programmed to optimise the overall performance of the car.
It is called remapping because the ECU is essentially a program that controls how the engine works.
When the car is remapped, the modified software is loaded through the car’s serial port (the OBD port) and overwrites the engine map with the new version, improving engine performance.
The ability to program directly through the OBD port has moved the tuning industry forward in leaps and bounds, and has allowed MasterTuning to develop some of the best software in the world.
We work on every kind of ECU, from the early EDC units that required chips to be desoldered and soldered back, to modern Tricore-processor ECUs with anti-tuning protection.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF REMAPPING?
Many people say that ECU remapping does not affect fuel consumption, but technically that is not true. If the car is driven normally after the remap, fuel consumption does not increase (and in many cases it can decrease). A good example: the improved torque produced by the engine after the remap means the driver no longer has to shift down a gear to hold speed on a hill, and may not need to change gear as often in traffic. All these small things add up to better fuel economy.
THE SERVICE WHAT WE DO
Customers can book the ECU remap for their car at one of our centres or by phone. For most vehicles the job takes around 2–3 hours and includes:
- a diagnostic check of the car as it is
- the ECU work itself, using the map we have previously developed for that specific vehicle (which can also be customised on request)
- finally, a test to verify the gains obtained.
At the end of the job a self-diagnosis of the injection system is run to check that everything is working perfectly, and the car’s original memory files are handed over to the customer for safekeeping. In the future, when the car is sold, the original ECU program can be restored at our centre in a few minutes, completely free of charge.
