If the seat belt light stays on even with the belt fastened, the problem is almost always in the buckle contact or the passenger presence sensor. It is an electrical fault, not an engine problem.

What it means

The system does not “see” the belt fastened, or it thinks a seat is occupied. On some cars the fault is linked to the airbag control unit and must be read with a diagnostic tool.

Most common causes

• Dirty or worn contact inside the buckle
• Faulty presence sensor in the passenger seat (pressure mat)
• Connector under the seat unplugged after cleaning or moving it
• Seat wiring worn by sliding
• Heavy objects on the passenger seat (false positive)

What to do right away

• Clean the buckle with compressed air: that is often enough
• Check that nothing heavy is resting on the passenger seat
• Check the connectors under the seats
• If it persists, have the faults read: it may be linked to the airbag system
