The dual-mass flywheel damps engine vibration: when the internal springs wear, metallic noises appear at idle, along with vibration when setting off and a characteristic noise on switch-off.
Typical symptoms
- Metallic noise at idle that disappears when the clutch is pressed
- “Rattling” when the engine is switched off
- Vibration at low revs, especially when setting off
- Jerking under gentle acceleration
Causes of wear
- High mileage: it is a wear component
- Driving at low revs in high gears (lugging)
- Torque increase not compatible with the component
- Frequent starts with start&stop
How it is checked
- Measuring the angular play and rocking with a specific tool
- Checking for traces of expelled grease and overheating
- Assessing the clutch at the same time, since it is removed together
If the flywheel is worn, replacing the clutch alone does not last long: both are dealt with in the same job.
How MasterTuning helps
We check the component with real measurements, not by elimination: flow rates, pressures, corrections and signals read directly from the ECU. We repair, replace and recalibrate the software when needed. Centres throughout Italy.

Frequently asked questions
Can you drive with a worn dual-mass flywheel?
For a while yes, but the vibration strains the gearbox and mounts and the noise gets worse: best to schedule the work.
Can a single-mass flywheel be fitted?
Conversion kits exist for some models, but they increase noise and vibration in the cabin: it must be assessed case by case.
How long does a dual-mass flywheel last?
On average 150,000-250,000 km, heavily influenced by driving style and low-rev use.
