P0101 — Mass air flow sensor: range/performance

Severity: Warning Can you drive? Yes, no known limitation Make: All makes (OBD-II standard)
MeaningThe MAF sensor measures how much air enters the engine. When its value does not agree with the other sensors, the ECU notices and sets this code.
FamilyPowertrain (P)

Typical symptoms

Reduced power
Higher fuel consumption
Unstable idle
Black smoke under acceleration

Common causes

Dirty or badly fitted air filter
MAF fouled with oil (often from oiled sport filters)
Air leak downstream of the sensor
Aged sensor out of calibration

What to do

Check filter and hoses first: an air leak after the MAF produces exactly this code. Cleaning the sensor with a dedicated product is often enough; if the reading stays out of range on the diagnostic tool, replace it.
