If the ESP light flashes, the system is intervening (slippery surface): that is normal. If it stays on steadily, stability control is switched off because of a fault. In the second case the car loses its electronic help in corners and in emergency braking.

What it means

ESP (or ASR/VSC/DSC depending on the make) compares the path the driver wants with the car’s actual path. If one of the sensors it relies on is unreliable, the system switches off and turns on the light.

Most common causes

• Wheel speed sensor fault (often with the ABS light on as well)
• Steering angle sensor not calibrated, typical after suspension work or replacing the steering rack
• Yaw or lateral acceleration sensor
• Throttle body or accelerator pedal sensor
• Very different tyre pressures between the two sides, or a space-saver spare fitted
• Faulty brake light switch

What to do right away

• Check tyre pressures: sometimes that is all it takes
• Check whether the ABS light is on too: it narrows the field immediately
• Have the faults read and, if needed, the steering angle sensor recalibrated
