P0089 — Fuel pressure regulator: performance

Severity: Serious Can you drive? With caution: limp mode possible, have it checked soon Make: All makes (OBD-II standard)
MeaningThe ECU is commanding the regulator but rail pressure does not follow as it should. On modern common rail engines this is one of the most frequent codes, and it usually comes shortly before a starting problem.
FamilyPowertrain (P)

Typical symptoms

Long cranking, especially when cold
Hesitation under load
Reduced power
Stalling at idle
Irregular injection noise

Common causes

Exhausted fuel filter: check this first
Worn regulator (IMV/DRV)
Worn high pressure pump
Injectors returning too much fuel
Air drawn in through a leaking union

What to do

Measure injector return and compare actual rail pressure against requested on the diagnostic tool: two quick tests that separate a filter from a pump. Replacing the high pressure pump without them is the biggest and most often pointless expense on this code.
