P0011 — Camshaft timing over-advanced (bank 1)

Severity: Serious Can you drive? With caution: limp mode possible, have it checked soon Make: All makes (OBD-II standard)
MeaningThe cam phaser is not holding the requested position and valve timing runs ahead of the map. On many engines this is the first sign of a stretched timing chain.
FamilyPowertrain (P)

Typical symptoms

Rough idle, especially when warm
Loss of low-end torque
Metallic rattle on cold start
Higher fuel consumption

Common causes

Stretched timing chain or weak tensioner
Dirty or seized cam phaser
Phaser solenoid clogged with deposits
Wrong oil or overdue oil changes
Blocked solenoid filter screen

What to do

Start by removing and cleaning the phaser solenoid and its small filter: cheap, and it fixes a good share of cases. If timing values on the diagnostic tool stay out of tolerance, the fault is mechanical and needs attention now: a stretched chain left alone can jump.
