P0168 — Engine Fuel Temperature Too High

Severity: Warning Can you drive? With caution: limp mode possible, have it checked soon Make: All makes (OBD-II standard)
MeaningThe engine computer has detected that the temperature of the fuel in the delivery system is higher than normal. This usually happens when the fuel absorbs excessive heat from the engine bay or the return fuel system overworks.
FamilyPowertrain (P)

Typical symptoms

The engine may hesitate or stumble when you press the accelerator
Engine might be harder to start when it is already warm
Check Engine light is illuminated on the dashboard

Common causes

Soaked heat from the engine bay affecting fuel lines or the rail
Faulty fuel temperature sensor giving an incorrect reading
Restricted fuel return line causing fuel to stay too long near the hot engine
Issues with the vehicle's cooling system raising overall underhood temperatures

What to do

Check the fuel temperature sensor and its wiring connector first for any obvious damage or loose pins. It is best to have this checked during your next routine service, but avoid driving in extreme heat if the engine shows performance issues.
