P0190 — Fuel rail pressure sensor circuit

Severity: Serious Can you drive? With caution: limp mode possible, have it checked soon Make: All makes (OBD-II standard)
MeaningThe sensor measuring fuel pressure in the rail is not sending a valid signal. The ECU loses the reference it uses to control the entire injection.
FamilyPowertrain (P)

Typical symptoms

Engine will not start, or starts and stalls
Severely reduced power
Very long cranking
Engine warning light on

Common causes

Loose or diesel-contaminated sensor connector
Heat-damaged wiring
Faulty sensor
Broken circuit earth

What to do

Check the sensor receives its 5 volt reference and has a good earth: supply present but no signal means the sensor needs replacing. Always work on the rail with the engine cold and the system depressurised — there are over 1,500 bar in there.
