P0403 — EGR control circuit

Severity: Warning Can you drive? Yes, no known limitation Make: All makes (OBD-II standard)
MeaningThe electrical circuit that drives the EGR valve is not responding as expected. Unlike the flow codes, the problem here is electrical, not carbon build-up.
FamilyPowertrain (P)

Typical symptoms

Engine warning light on
Valve stuck in one position
Rough idle
Black smoke or reduced power

Common causes

Faulty valve motor
Broken wiring or corroded connector
Blown fuse or broken earth
Faulty ECU output stage

What to do

Run an actuation test and watch whether the valve moves: if it stays put while supply is present, the unit needs replacing. Clean the duct while you are there anyway — a new valve on a carboned duct seizes again quickly.
