On Mercedes BlueTEC cars the AdBlue error appears as a message asking you to go to a workshop and showing how many kilometres remain before starting is blocked. The most common culprits are the NOx sensors, the dosing module with the tank heater and urea deposits: each fault has a very different cost, so diagnosis comes before any part.
Which Mercedes have AdBlue
BlueTEC is the name of the Mercedes diesels with SCR and AdBlue. Depending on engine and year you find it on C-Class and E-Class with the four-cylinder 220 d and 250 d, on the GLC, GLE and ML (four-cylinder and V6), on recent A-Class and B-Class diesels and on the Sprinter van. The newest diesels integrate the SCR catalyst into the particulate filter but still use AdBlue. If there is a blue cap under the fuel flap or in the boot, the system is fitted.
What the dashboard shows
- A message telling you to go to a workshop for AdBlue, with “Restart still possible for X km”.
- Engine or emissions warning light on, sometimes with limited power.
- AdBlue level low: a graduated warning with the estimated remaining range.
Once the countdown has started, every stop with a hot engine far from a workshop is a risk: better not to delay.
The most frequent faults on BlueTEC engines
| Component | Typical symptom | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NOx sensors | Efficiency or plausibility error | There is more than one: you need to find which is out of range |
| Dosing module / pump | Pressure not reached, pump error | High cost: confirm with real values |
| Tank heater | Errors in the cold, inconsistent level | More evident in cold areas |
| AdBlue injector | Deposits and poor dosing | Often fixed by cleaning or targeted replacement |
| Quality / level sensor | Reductant quality alarm | Beware of non-compliant products |
Why a real diagnosis is needed
On these cars an SCR error often has several overlapping causes: a slow downstream NOx sensor can look like a pump problem, and vice versa. Replacing a module worth over a thousand euros without checking is not sensible. Reading live data (reductant pressure, heater temperature, requested and actual dosing) shows where the fault is. After replacing an NOx sensor or the module, the adaptation with the diagnostic tool is needed, otherwise the error returns. For the filter see the DPF guide.
Typical fault codes
- P20EE: SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold
- P20E8: reductant (AdBlue) pressure too low
- P207F: reductant quality out of specification
- P204F: reductant dosing system performance
The exact codes depend on the ECU and only point the diagnosis in a direction; they do not tell you what to replace. Only live data shows whether the fault is in the sensor, the pump or the injector. The big picture is in the complete AdBlue guide.
If the message appears: what to do, in order
- Read the message and note the remaining kilometres or starts: that is the time you have.
- Do not wait for the countdown to reach zero: once it does, the car will not start.
- Do not top up at random: if the level is low, use only AdBlue that meets ISO 22241.
- Have the SCR system errors and live data read before replacing parts.
- After the repair, ask for the counter reset and, if an NOx sensor was replaced, the adaptation with the diagnostic tool.
How much it costs
In order of cost: NOx sensor or injector €150-400, filter or line €50-200, pump or tank module €600-1,500, SCR catalyst over €2,000. These are indicative figures that change with the model and the type of part; the detail is in how much it costs to repair the AdBlue system. More than the amount, the order matters: diagnosis first, then the part.
What the law says
The SCR system is a type-approved emissions device: on vehicles used on public roads the correct solution is diagnosis and repair, restoring normal operation. Deactivation is not permitted on the road and is reserved for competition, off-road or export vehicles.
How MasterTuning helps
We read the errors with professional tools, check the real SCR parameters (pressure, dosing, NOx sensors, heaters) and replace only the component that has actually failed, with the adaptation procedures when needed. Find the nearest centre or write to us with model, engine, year and the message shown on the dashboard.
Are you a workshop or a technician?
If you diagnose and work on SCR systems, or want to start working on ECUs, the tools are in our shop: Flex (OBD, Bench and Boot) and The Genius (stand-alone, with touchscreen), plus Korhex for protected ECUs. If you already have the equipment, you can get the modified files on mastertuningfile.com (credit price list).
