On Euro 6 diesel Opels the AdBlue error arrives as an emissions system fault warning with remaining kilometres or starts, and sometimes with reduced power. The most reported causes are the NOx sensor, the pump or tank module and an injector fouled with urea: it is found by diagnosis, not by replacing parts at random.
Which Opels have AdBlue
Depending on engine and year, the SCR system with AdBlue is found on the Insignia, Astra, Zafira Tourer and Mokka X with the Euro 6 CDTI diesels, and on the most recent Vivaro and Movano vans. On newer models with PSA-derived engines (Crossland, Grandland) the same rules apply as in our article on Peugeot and Citroën BlueHDi. The blue filler is under the fuel flap or in the boot, depending on the model.
What the dashboard shows
- An AdBlue or emissions system fault warning, with kilometres or starts remaining before the block.
- Engine light on and, in some cases, reduced power.
- AdBlue level low: a top-up reminder, with no countdown.
The wording varies by model and year. If a countdown appears, the fault is real and time is limited.
The most frequent faults on Opel CDTI engines
| Component | Typical symptom | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NOx sensor | Efficiency error, countdown | Diagnose with real values, not just the code |
| Dosing pump / tank module | Low pressure, noise, pump error | The highest-cost item among common faults |
| AdBlue injector | Insufficient dosing | White deposits of crystallised urea |
| Tank heater | Errors only in the cold | Shows up in the first hours after a winter start |
| Level / quality sensor | Level read incorrectly | Can give an error even with a full tank |
What to check before replacing parts
On these engines an SCR error often comes back if only the sensor is replaced without checking the upstream cause. It is worth checking in order: AdBlue quality and level, injector condition, power supply and wiring of the module, then the sensor. If the car also reports problems with the filter or exhaust gas recirculation, the diagnosis has to be extended: see the DPF guide and the EGR valve guide.
Typical fault codes
- P20EE: SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold
- P20E8: reductant (AdBlue) pressure too low
- P207F: reductant quality out of specification
- P204F: reductant dosing system performance
The exact codes depend on the ECU and only point the diagnosis in a direction; they do not tell you what to replace. Only live data shows whether the fault is in the sensor, the pump or the injector. The big picture is in the complete AdBlue guide.
If the message appears: what to do, in order
- Read the message and note the remaining kilometres or starts: that is the time you have.
- Do not wait for the countdown to reach zero: once it does, the car will not start.
- Do not top up at random: if the level is low, use only AdBlue that meets ISO 22241.
- Have the SCR system errors and live data read before replacing parts.
- After the repair, ask for the counter reset and, if an NOx sensor was replaced, the adaptation with the diagnostic tool.
How much it costs
In order of cost: NOx sensor or injector €150-400, filter or line €50-200, pump or tank module €600-1,500, SCR catalyst over €2,000. These are indicative figures that change with the model and the type of part; the detail is in how much it costs to repair the AdBlue system. More than the amount, the order matters: diagnosis first, then the part.
What the law says
The SCR system is a type-approved emissions device: on vehicles used on public roads the correct solution is diagnosis and repair, restoring normal operation. Deactivation is not permitted on the road and is reserved for competition, off-road or export vehicles.
How MasterTuning helps
We read the errors with professional tools, check the real SCR parameters (pressure, dosing, NOx sensors, heaters) and replace only the component that has actually failed, with the adaptation procedures when needed. Find the nearest centre or write to us with model, engine, year and the message shown on the dashboard.
Are you a workshop or a technician?
If you diagnose and work on SCR systems, or want to start working on ECUs, the tools are in our shop: Flex (OBD, Bench and Boot) and The Genius (stand-alone, with touchscreen), plus Korhex for protected ECUs. If you already have the equipment, you can get the modified files on mastertuningfile.com (credit price list).
