AdBlue error on the VAG group (Golf, Passat, Audi TDI): NOx sensor and other causes

AdBlue error on the VAG group (Golf, Passat, Audi TDI): NOx sensor and other causes

On the VAG group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat) the AdBlue error usually means an SCR system fault with reduced power and a countdown before starting is blocked. Suspect number one is the NOx sensor, followed by the tank heater, the dosing module and the injector: they are very different in cost, and only diagnosis tells them apart.

Which VAG cars have AdBlue

Depending on engine and year, the SCR system is found on the Golf 7 and 8, Passat B8, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy and Crafter with the Euro 6 TDIs; on the Audi A3, A4, A6, Q3, Q5 and Q7 with the 2.0 and 3.0 TDIs; on the Skoda Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq and on the Seat Leon and Ateca. Some older 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI engines use other solutions and have no AdBlue: the blue filler cap near the fuel filler is the quickest check.

What the dashboard shows

  • An AdBlue fault warning with kilometres remaining before the engine will not restart.
  • Reduced power and the engine or emissions light on.
  • Low level: a top-up warning with the estimated range.

On VAG cars the message often appears after a few driving cycles, not at once: the error is stored and then confirmed.

The most frequent faults on VAG TDI engines

Tank heaterErrors in winter, inconsistent levelUrea freezes: the heater has to melt it
Dosing module / pumpLow pressure, dosing errorHighest cost: confirm with the parameters

What sets the VAG group apart

On the group's TDIs the SCR system is managed very tightly by the ECU: an NOx sensor that reads badly can trigger the countdown even if everything else works. That is why the real sensor values are looked at first, then the heater is checked and only after that the dosing module is considered. Once repaired, the counters must be reset and the new components adapted with the diagnostic tool. If the car also shows filter or EGR problems, see the DPF guide and the one on the EGR valve.

Typical fault codes

  • P20EE: SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold
  • P20E8: reductant (AdBlue) pressure too low
  • P207F: reductant quality out of specification
  • P204F: reductant dosing system performance

The exact codes depend on the ECU and only point the diagnosis in a direction; they do not tell you what to replace. Only live data shows whether the fault is in the sensor, the pump or the injector. The big picture is in the complete AdBlue guide.

If the message appears: what to do, in order

  1. Read the message and note the remaining kilometres or starts: that is the time you have.
  2. Do not wait for the countdown to reach zero: once it does, the car will not start.
  3. Do not top up at random: if the level is low, use only AdBlue that meets ISO 22241.
  4. Have the SCR system errors and live data read before replacing parts.
  5. After the repair, ask for the counter reset and, if an NOx sensor was replaced, the adaptation with the diagnostic tool.

How much it costs

In order of cost: NOx sensor or injector €150-400, filter or line €50-200, pump or tank module €600-1,500, SCR catalyst over €2,000. These are indicative figures that change with the model and the type of part; the detail is in how much it costs to repair the AdBlue system. More than the amount, the order matters: diagnosis first, then the part.

What the law says

The SCR system is a type-approved emissions device: on vehicles used on public roads the correct solution is diagnosis and repair, restoring normal operation. Deactivation is not permitted on the road and is reserved for competition, off-road or export vehicles.

How MasterTuning helps

We read the errors with professional tools, check the real SCR parameters (pressure, dosing, NOx sensors, heaters) and replace only the component that has actually failed, with the adaptation procedures when needed. Find the nearest centre or write to us with model, engine, year and the message shown on the dashboard.

Are you a workshop or a technician?

If you diagnose and work on SCR systems, or want to start working on ECUs, the tools are in our shop: Flex (OBD, Bench and Boot) and The Genius (stand-alone, with touchscreen), plus Korhex for protected ECUs. If you already have the equipment, you can get the modified files on mastertuningfile.com (credit price list).

Frequently asked questions

Which VAG cars have AdBlue?
The Euro 6 TDIs of the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy, Crafter, Audi A3, A4, A6, Q3, Q5, Q7, Skoda Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq and Seat Leon and Ateca, depending on the engine.
What is the most frequent fault on VAG cars?
The NOx sensor, followed by the tank heater, the dosing module and the AdBlue injector.
Why does the AdBlue error appear only in winter?
The reductant freezes at about −11 °C and the heater has to melt it; if it is weak the system reports the error until it warms up.
Does anything need resetting after the repair?
Yes: the counters are reset and the new components, such as the NOx sensor, are adapted with the diagnostic tool.
How much does AdBlue repair cost on a Golf or an Audi?
From €150-400 for an NOx sensor or injector to €600-1,500 for the dosing module or pump; the quote follows the diagnosis.
