Simply reading the fault codes costs €20-50 or is offered free of charge; a real diagnosis, with analysis of the real parameters and tests on the components, costs roughly €50-120 and takes from half an hour to several hours.
Reading codes ≠ diagnosis
- Reading codes: plug in the tool and print the codes. It says where to look, not what is broken.
- Diagnosis: reads the parameters in real time under load, runs actuator tests, measures pressures and flow rates, compares the values with the expected ones. It identifies the component responsible.
Why the code is not enough
A P0299 (turbo underboost) can be due to the variable geometry, a hose, the intercooler, the DPF or the sensor. Replacing "what the code says" means guessing at best: the cost of a wrong component far exceeds that of the diagnosis.
What you should receive
- The list of current and stored faults
- The real measured values, not just the conclusion
- An indication of what was ruled out and how
- A quote distinguishing necessary repairs from recommended work
The figures given are indicative market ranges, useful as a guide: the actual cost depends on model, engine, chosen parts and labour hours. An exact quote requires the vehicle registration.
Tailored quote
Before quoting we check what is really needed: an accurate diagnosis often avoids an expensive replacement. MasterTuning centres throughout Italy.
