The EGR valve recirculates part of the exhaust gases into the intake to reduce nitrogen oxides: over time it becomes encrusted with soot and sticks, open or closed. The result is a rough idle, smoke and loss of power.
Typical symptoms
- Rough idle and vibration
- Loss of power, sometimes limp mode
- Black smoke under acceleration
- Rising consumption and a DPF that loads up quickly
- Engine light on with EGR flow faults
Cleaning or replacement?
- Cleaning: effective if the valve is only encrusted and the actuator works
- Replacement: necessary with a faulty electric actuator, damaged seat or warped valve body
- The intake manifold should always be checked too, often as encrusted as the valve
What about deactivation?
Software deactivation of the EGR is not permitted on vehicles used on public roads: it applies only to vehicles intended for off-road use, competition or export. The correct solution on the road is to clean or replace it and restore original operation.
How MasterTuning helps
We check the component with real measurements, not by elimination: flow rates, pressures, corrections and signals read directly from the ECU. We repair, replace and recalibrate the software when needed. Centres throughout Italy.

Frequently asked questions
How often should the EGR be cleaned?
There is no fixed interval: it depends on use. With many short urban trips, deposits build up faster.
Does cleaning the EGR fix the loss of power?
Often yes, if the valve was stuck. If the fault concerns the actuator or the measured flow, replacement may be needed.
Can the EGR be deactivated?
Not on vehicles used on public roads: deactivation is reserved for off-road, motorsport or export use.
