The red oil pressure light is the only one that requires you to stop immediately and switch off the engine: without pressure, the internal parts run without lubrication and are damaged within seconds. Driving on can mean seizing the engine.

What it means

It does not indicate the oil level but the pressure in the lubrication circuit. It can come on even with the oil at the right level, if the pump or the circuit is not generating pressure.

Most common causes

• Oil level too low due to consumption or a leak
• Worn oil pump or clogged filter
• Faulty pressure sensor (the lucky case)
• Oil too diluted by fuel or too old
• Worn bearings: pressure drops especially with a hot engine and at idle

What to do right away

• Pull over safely and switch off the engine; do not try to “get it home”
• Check the oil level with the engine cold and on level ground
• If the level is correct and the light stays on, do not restart: have the car transported
• Have the actual pressure checked with a gauge before replacing parts
