A light whistle from the turbo under acceleration is normal; a high-pitched, rising whistle, a siren noise or a hiss under acceleration indicate a problem. Acting early prevents the turbo failing, which can send debris into the engine.

How to interpret the noise

• High-pitched whistle rising with the revs: play in the turbo bearings
• Hiss of air under acceleration: loose hose or clip, leaking intercooler
• Metallic noise: the impeller touching the housing: stop immediately
• Whistle with loss of power: boost pressure escaping

Most common causes

• Cracked hoses or loose clips
• Intercooler holed by stones or corrosion
• Worn turbo bearings due to neglected oil maintenance
• Variable geometry stuck by deposits
• Wastegate or actuator out of adjustment

What to do right away

• Check the oil level and the oil change history: the turbo lives on lubrication
• Have the axial and radial play of the impeller checked
• Have a pressure test of the boost circuit done: it finds the leak in minutes
