A timing drive failure on an interference engine means bent valves and, often, a cylinder head and pistons to rebuild: it is the most expensive failure that can be avoided with maintenance.
Belt: real intervals
- Follow the manufacturer’s interval, but also consider time, not just kilometres: rubber ages
- Shorten the interval with intense urban use, a lot of towing or extreme climates
- Always replace the tensioner, idlers and water pump together with the belt
Chain: what to check
- Metallic noise when cold in the first seconds after starting
- Correlation faults between crankshaft and camshaft
- Checking the chain stretch value with the diagnostic tool, where available
- Strict oil maintenance: the hydraulic chain tensioner works with oil pressure
Symptoms of a timing drive out of phase
- Loss of power and hard starting
- Rough engine and high consumption
- Faults P0016-P0019 on crankshaft/camshaft correlation
How MasterTuning helps
We check the component with real measurements, not by elimination: flow rates, pressures, corrections and signals read directly from the ECU. We repair, replace and recalibrate the software when needed. Centres throughout Italy.

Frequently asked questions
How often is the timing belt changed?
Follow the manufacturer’s interval in kilometres and in years: rubber ages even if the car is driven little.
Does a timing chain last forever?
No: it stretches with use, especially with neglected oil maintenance. It must be checked with the diagnostic tool and replaced when necessary.
What happens if the timing drive breaks?
On interference engines the valves hit the pistons: the damage is serious and the repair expensive.
