White smoke is not always a fault: a little vapour in the morning or in the cold is normal. It is a problem if it stays when the engine is warm, smells sweet or makes the coolant level drop.

Causes of persistent white smoke
- Head gasket failure: coolant in the combustion chamber
- Injectors with excess fuel (diesel)
- Glow plugs worn: incomplete combustion when cold
- Cracked head or block (rarer)
- Wrong fuel pressure or timing
How it is checked
- Coolant level: does it drop with no visible leak?
- Bubbles in the expansion tank with the engine running.
- Cylinder leak-down test or combustion gas test in the coolant.
- Injector and glow plug test (diesel).
What to do
If the white smoke is persistent and the coolant drops, stop: carrying on can seriously damage the engine. If it appears only when cold and is light, it is normal and passes in a few minutes.
