The three routes, in order of cost
- Forced regeneration: with the diagnostic tool when the filter is loaded with soot but not ash. The cheapest and often sufficient solution.
- Professional cleaning: the filter is removed and washed with dedicated machines. Needed when soot is too much for regeneration to clear, or the filter is full of ash.
- Replacement: unavoidable only with a melted, cracked or crumbled filter, or ash so saturated that washing will not recover it.

Removing or disabling the particulate filter is not permitted on road vehicles: it concerns only competition, off-road or export vehicles. On a road car the correct solution is to clean or, if needed, replace with an approved part.
