How much does it cost to replace the turbo

Replacing the turbo costs roughly €800-2,000 with a new part and €500-1,200 with a reconditioned one, labour included. The figure varies a lot with the model and with what caused the failure.

Indicative prices

OptionIndicative cost
Turbocharger overhaul€400-1,000
Reconditioned turbo fitted€500-1,200
New turbo fitted€800-2,000
Premium models / complex variable geometryover €2,000

What affects it

  • Turbo type (fixed or variable geometry, twin turbo)
  • Accessibility: some engines need a lot of stripping down
  • Replacement of related parts: pipes, oil, filter
  • Cleaning of the lubrication circuit and intercooler

Before replacing: the cause

A turbo almost always fails for an outside reason: dirty or low oil, a broken air filter, oil leaks, blocked DPF/EGR, out-of-tolerance injectors. If that is not corrected, the new one lasts a few months. It is why diagnosis comes before ordering the part.

Signs of a turbo to replace

  • Loud whistle or metallic noise
  • Loss of power or limp mode
  • Blue or white smoke, oil consumption
  • Oil in the intercooler pipes

Overhaul or new

A well-done overhaul (balancing, bearings, geometry check) costs less and lasts. New is preferable when the housing is damaged or the turbine is heavily stressed.

How MasterTuning helps

We read the real values of the control unit, not just the code: that is the difference between finding the faulty component and replacing parts by trial and error. After the repair we clear the error and check that it does not come back. Find the nearest centre or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace the turbo?

Roughly €800-2,000 with a new part, €500-1,200 with a reconditioned one.

Is an overhaul worth it?

Often yes, if the housing is intact: it costs less and lasts as long as an equivalent part.

Why does the new turbo fail quickly?

If the cause (oil, filters, leaks) was not corrected, the new turbo is damaged in a short time.

Can I drive with a broken turbo?

It is not recommended: fragments can damage the engine.
