P0234: meaning, causes and solutions

Code P0234 reports that the turbo has exceeded the pressure requested by the control unit (overboost). The control unit contains it by reducing power: causes need to be found, and it is not always the turbocharger.

What code P0234 means

Turbocharger boost pressure too high (overboost).

Typical symptoms

  • Sudden loss of power or limp mode
  • Check engine light on
  • Noises or whistling from the turbo
  • Black smoke under acceleration
  • Irregular torque peaks

Most likely causes

CauseHow commonWhat to do
Stuck wastegate or variable geometryVery commonClean or replace the actuator
Solenoid or vacuum linesCommonTest and replace
Boost pressure sensorCommonCheck the signal and replace
Turbocharger with play or damageLess commonOverhaul or replace
Unsuitable software or undeveloped modificationLess commonCheck the file and correct it

How it is diagnosed

  1. Read requested and actual boost pressure.
  2. Check actuator, solenoid and hoses.
  3. Check the sensor.
  4. Check the software if it has been modified.

Can you drive with code P0234?

With care and for short trips: prolonged overboost stresses turbo and engine.

How much does it cost to fix?

WorkIndicative cost
Solenoid / hoses€50-250
Turbo actuator€150-500
Pressure sensor€60-200
Turbocharger€800-2,000

How MasterTuning helps

We read the real values of the control unit, not just the code: that is the difference between finding the faulty component and replacing parts by trial and error. After the repair we clear the error and check that it does not come back. Find the nearest centre or contact us.
