P0299: meaning, causes and solutions

Code P0299 means the turbo is not reaching the pressure the control unit asks for: the car loses power and often goes into limp mode. Causes range from a loose hose to a turbocharger that needs repair.

What code P0299 means

Turbocharger boost pressure too low (underboost).

Typical symptoms

  • Loss of power, especially under acceleration
  • Limp mode
  • Whistling or unusual noises from the turbo
  • Black or white smoke
  • Higher fuel consumption

Most likely causes

CauseHow commonWhat to do
Air leaks in hoses or intercoolerVery commonLeak test and replace hoses and clamps
Stuck variable geometry or wastegateCommonClean or replace the actuator
Solenoid or vacuum linesCommonTest and replace
Clogged DPF or restricted catalytic converterCommonMeasure back-pressure and clean
Worn turbochargerLess commonOverhaul or replace

How it is diagnosed

  1. Read requested and actual boost pressure during a road test.
  2. Leak test of the intake circuit.
  3. Check the actuator and solenoid.
  4. Measure exhaust back-pressure.

Can you drive with code P0299?

Yes for short trips and with care: power is reduced and the fault can get worse. If you hear whistling or see smoke, stop.

How much does it cost to fix?

WorkIndicative cost
Turbo hose or clamp€50-200
Actuator / solenoid€150-500
Turbo cleaning or overhaul€400-1,000
New turbocharger€800-2,000

How MasterTuning helps

We read the real values of the control unit, not just the code: that is the difference between finding the faulty component and replacing parts by trial and error. After the repair we clear the error and check that it does not come back. Find the nearest centre or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

What does P0299 mean?

That boost pressure is below the requested value: the turbo is not "pushing" as much as it should.

Is P0299 always the turbocharger?

No: more often it is an air leak, a stuck actuator or a clogged filter. The turbo should be judged after testing.

Can I drive with P0299?

For short trips yes, with reduced power; better not to push it.

How much does it cost to fix P0299?

From €50-200 for a hose to €800-2,000 for a new turbocharger.
