A red battery light on while the engine is running means the system is not charging: you are driving on the battery’s remaining charge alone. You generally have only a few kilometres before the car cuts out.
What it means
On start-up the light comes on and goes straight off: that is normal. If it stays on while driving, the problem is in the charging circuit, not the battery itself.
Most common causes
- Auxiliary belt loose, worn or broken (often with a heavy steering wheel and rising temperature)
- Faulty alternator or burnt-out voltage regulator
- Corroded or loose battery terminals
- Damaged earth cable or alternator positive cable
- End-of-life battery that no longer holds a charge
What to do right away
- Switch off non-essential electrical loads: air conditioning, heated seats, radio, unnecessary lights
- Do not switch off the engine until you arrive: it may not restart
- If the light comes on together with the temperature light, stop: the belt has probably snapped
- Have the charging voltage measured (it should be around 13.8-14.6 V with the engine running)

How many kilometres can I drive with the battery light on?
It depends on the remaining charge: generally from a few kilometres to a few dozen. Reach the nearest workshop with the electrical loads switched off.
Is it the battery or the alternator?
If the light comes on with the engine running it is almost always the alternator or the belt. A flat battery causes problems mainly on starting.
Why do the battery and temperature lights come on together?
Because the same belt drives the alternator and the water pump: if it snaps, the car stops charging and stops cooling. Stop immediately.
