A power steering warning light means the steering assistance is reduced or absent: the steering still works but becomes much heavier, especially when manoeuvring. The car can be driven, but it needs more effort and attention.

What it means

On electric power steering (EPS) the control unit switches off the assistance to protect itself from a fault; on hydraulic systems the problem is almost always mechanical or an oil level issue.

Most common causes

• Torque or steering angle sensor not calibrated
• EPS motor or power steering control unit fault
• Weak battery: many cars disable the EPS below a certain voltage
• On hydraulic systems: low oil level, loose belt, worn pump
• Fuse or corroded connector
• Fault stored after a battery replacement or suspension work

What to do right away

• Try switching the car off and on again: some temporary faults clear
• Check the battery voltage: it is an underestimated cause
• On hydraulic power steering check the oil level and the belt
• If the steering is very heavy, drive carefully to the workshop
