The MAF sensor measures the air drawn in by the engine: when it ages it under-reads flow and the control unit meters fuel badly. It is one of the most frequent causes of power loss and smoke on diesels.
Typical symptoms of a dirty or faulty MAF
- Loss of power above a certain speed
- Black smoke under acceleration
- Rising consumption
- Intermittent limp mode
- Jerking under acceleration and unstable idle
- Error codes P0100-P0103 (P0101, P0102)
The quick test
With the engine running you can unplug the MAF connector: if performance improves noticeably, the sensor was giving a wrong value. It is an indicative test, to be confirmed in diagnosis by comparing measured air flow with the expected value at the reference speed.
Causes of failure
- Poor-quality or badly fitted air filter
- Sports filter oil contaminating the filament
- Oil vapour from the crankcase breather
- Moisture and ageing of the sensor
- Cleaning with unsuitable products
Clean or replace
Cleaning with a product specific to MAF sensors can recover a dirty one (a few euros plus time); if the value stays out of spec, or the filament is damaged, it has to be replaced with a quality part (roughly €80-300 depending on the model). Never use generic sprays or touch the filament.
How to be sure it is the culprit
- Reading air flow in diagnosis and comparing with revs and load
- Checking for leaks in the intake ducting, which distort the measurement
- Checking the air filter and its make/type
How MasterTuning helps
We read the real values of the control unit, not just the code: that is the difference between finding the faulty component and replacing parts by trial and error. After the repair we clear the error and check that it does not come back. Find the nearest centre or contact us.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with the MAF sensor unplugged?
For short stretches in an emergency yes, with the control unit using substitute values, but it is not a solution: consumption and emissions get worse.
How do I know the MAF needs replacing?
By comparing measured air flow with the expected value at the reference speed: if the deviation is large, the sensor is out of spec.
Does cleaning the MAF work?
On dirty sensors yes, with a specific product. On a damaged filament there is no recovery.
How much does a new MAF sensor cost?
Roughly €80-300 depending on the model, plus the replacement work, which is normally quick.
