Fault code P0016 means incorrect correlation between crankshaft and camshaft. The ECU detects that the camshaft position does not match the expected one relative to the crankshaft.
Typical symptoms
- Long or impossible starting
- Loss of power
- Rough engine
- Metallic noise when cold on chain engines
Most common causes
- Stretched timing chain or faulty tensioner
- Belt jumped one tooth
- Phase variator stuck by deposits
- Clogged variator solenoid valve
- Damaged camshaft sensor or reluctor ring
How it is checked in diagnosis
- Reading the actual and requested phase angles
- Checking the timing with the locking tools
- Checking oil pressure and quality (variators live on it)
Can you drive with code P0016?
Better not: if the timing is really out of phase the risk of mechanical damage is high.
