P0101: meaning, causes and solutions

Code P0101 means the MAF sensor signal is not consistent with what is expected: the measured air quantity does not match engine speed, load and throttle position. The most common culprit is a dirty MAF sensor, but not the only one.

What code P0101 means

Mass air flow (MAF) signal out of range or performance problem.

Typical symptoms

  • Loss of power above a certain speed
  • Black smoke under acceleration
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Rough idle and jerking
  • Intermittent limp mode

Most likely causes

CauseHow commonWhat to do
Dirty or aged MAF sensorVery commonClean with a specific product or replace
Leaks in the intake ductCommonLeak test and repair
Poor-quality or badly fitted air filterCommonReplace with a suitable part
Oil vapour from the crankcase breatherLess commonClean the breather circuit
Wiring or connectorLess commonCheck and repair

How it is diagnosed

  1. Read the air flow at idle and at speed and compare with the expected value.
  2. Test by unplugging the MAF (indicative).
  3. Check hoses, filter and breather.
  4. Check the wiring.

Can you drive with code P0101?

For short trips yes, but with the control unit using substitute values consumption and emissions get worse. Better to fix it soon.

How much does it cost to fix?

WorkIndicative cost
MAF cleaninga few euros + labour
New MAF sensor€80-300
Intake leak repair€50-250

How MasterTuning helps

We read the real values of the control unit, not just the code: that is the difference between finding the faulty component and replacing parts by trial and error. After the repair we clear the error and check that it does not come back. Find the nearest centre or contact us.
