On Peugeot and Citroën cars with the BlueHDi engine the AdBlue error usually appears as “Antipollution fault” with a countdown in kilometres: when it reaches zero the car will not start. The most frequent causes are the NOx sensor, the tank module with its heater and a crystallised injector, and it is almost always fixed by replacing a single component after diagnosis.
Which models have AdBlue
BlueHDi is the commercial name of the Euro 6 diesels of the PSA group. Depending on version and year, the SCR system with AdBlue is fitted to the Peugeot 308, 508, 2008, 3008, 5008, Partner, Expert and Boxer, and to the Citroën C4, C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso, C5 Aircross, Berlingo, Jumpy and Jumper. Not every version has it: the quickest check is to look for the blue-capped filler near the diesel filler or in the boot, or to check the handbook for an AdBlue entry.
What the dashboard shows
- “Antipollution fault” with “Starting impossible in X km”: the typical SCR fault message, and the number goes down as you drive.
- Engine or antipollution warning light on, sometimes with a loss of power.
- “AdBlue level low”: not a fault, a top-up is enough.
The wording changes with the year and the instrument cluster, but the mechanism is always the same: warning, countdown in kilometres, starting blocked when it reaches zero.
The most frequent faults on BlueHDi engines
| Component | Typical symptom | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NOx sensor (upstream or downstream) | SCR efficiency error, antipollution message | Among the most common causes; adaptation is needed after replacement |
| Tank module and heater | Errors mostly in the cold, inconsistent level | Urea freezes at about −11 °C: the heater must work |
| AdBlue injector | Poor dosing, white deposits | Crystallisation: sometimes it can be cleaned, otherwise replaced |
| Contaminated AdBlue | Reductant quality error | Happens with top-ups of doubtful origin |
| Heated line and connectors | Intermittent faults | Contact oxidation from urea spills |
Why it happens so often on BlueHDi engines
The SCR system of BlueHDi engines works closely with the particulate filter and with exhaust temperature management: short trips, long stops and occasional top-ups favour urea deposits in the injector and in the line. People who use the car in town for short journeys see the error more often than motorway drivers. Before replacing a sensor it is worth ruling out the wiring and the heater: a new NOx sensor fitted on an electrical problem will throw the error again. For the filter see also the DPF guide.
Typical fault codes
- P20EE: SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold
- P20E8: reductant (AdBlue) pressure too low
- P207F: reductant quality out of specification
- P204F: reductant dosing system performance
The exact codes depend on the ECU and only point the diagnosis in a direction; they do not tell you what to replace. Only live data shows whether the fault is in the sensor, the pump or the injector. The big picture is in the complete AdBlue guide.
If the message appears: what to do, in order
- Read the message and note the remaining kilometres or starts: that is the time you have.
- Do not wait for the countdown to reach zero: once it does, the car will not start.
- Do not top up at random: if the level is low, use only AdBlue that meets ISO 22241.
- Have the SCR system errors and live data read before replacing parts.
- After the repair, ask for the counter reset and, if an NOx sensor was replaced, the adaptation with the diagnostic tool.
How much it costs
In order of cost: NOx sensor or injector €150-400, filter or line €50-200, pump or tank module €600-1,500, SCR catalyst over €2,000. These are indicative figures that change with the model and the type of part; the detail is in how much it costs to repair the AdBlue system. More than the amount, the order matters: diagnosis first, then the part.
What the law says
The SCR system is a type-approved emissions device: on vehicles used on public roads the correct solution is diagnosis and repair, restoring normal operation. Deactivation is not permitted on the road and is reserved for competition, off-road or export vehicles.
How MasterTuning helps
We read the errors with professional tools, check the real SCR parameters (pressure, dosing, NOx sensors, heaters) and replace only the component that has actually failed, with the adaptation procedures when needed. Find the nearest centre or write to us with model, engine, year and the message shown on the dashboard.
Are you a workshop or a technician?
If you diagnose and work on SCR systems, or want to start working on ECUs, the tools are in our shop: Flex (OBD, Bench and Boot) and The Genius (stand-alone, with touchscreen), plus Korhex for protected ECUs. If you already have the equipment, you can get the modified files on mastertuningfile.com (credit price list).
