The ECU is the computer that manages the engine: injection, turbo pressure, timing, limiters. The manufacturer programs it with a single software for every market, with wide safety margins for different fuels, climates and regulations. Remapping replaces that software with a calibration developed on your vehicle, to gain power and torque while keeping reliability. Read more: what is ECU remapping.
On a modern turbodiesel a Stage 1 brings roughly 15-30% more power and torque; the most noticeable gain is at mid revs, the range you use in everyday driving. Stock and remapped figures for your version are in the vehicle database, which today covers over 17,800 configurations from 170 makes.
It depends on the reading method (OBD, bench or boot), the type of ECU and the development work required. Very cheap offers usually mean generic files, not developed on the vehicle. Read the guide to costs and results or ask for a quote stating model and engine.
Via OBD, reading and writing the new file generally takes 30 minutes to an hour, plus the road test and parameter check. Protected ECUs, which have to be opened and read on the bench or in Boot mode, take a few hours. How a protected ECU is accessed.
With relaxed driving, consumption stays the same or drops slightly, because with more torque you need less throttle. With sporty driving, using the extra power, it increases. Consumption is decided by your right foot, not by the file.
Yes. Before every job we save the original file of your ECU: it is an essential condition of work done properly and allows the factory configuration to be restored at any time.
A file developed on the vehicle, within the margins of the components, does not damage the engine. The risk comes from generic files or from a vehicle already in poor condition: that is why before the job we check stored faults, turbo, injectors, clutch and particulate filter. If the vehicle is not in the right condition, we say so beforehand.
Modifying the engine software counts as a change to the vehicle’s construction characteristics (art. 78 of the Italian Highway Code): a power increase over the type-approval data must be recorded on the registration document. We inform you before the job about what this means in your case. DPF, EGR and AdBlue deactivation is not permitted on vehicles used on public roads and is reserved for competition, off-road or export vehicles.
The manufacturer may refuse warranty work on components connected to the engine and transmission if it detects a software modification. On a vehicle still under warranty we recommend discussing it with us before proceeding; once the warranty has expired the issue no longer arises.
If the light is steady you can reach the workshop driving gently; if it flashes, reduce speed immediately, because the catalytic converter is at risk. Either way a diagnosis is needed: we read the fault codes and above all the real values from the ECU, to identify the component responsible instead of replacing parts by trial and error. The blog has guides to the most frequent fault codes.
Limp mode protects the engine by limiting revs and turbo pressure. The most frequent causes are a loaded particulate filter, a stuck EGR valve, leaks in the boost circuit or insufficient fuel pressure. Do not keep accelerating hard: have the faults and real parameters read before the problem gets worse.
Reading the codes alone costs €20-50 or is offered free; a complete diagnosis, with real-time parameter analysis and component tests, costs roughly €50-120. It is the difference between knowing where to look and knowing what is broken. What a real diagnosis includes.
Almost always it is cleaned: forced regeneration with the diagnostic tool if the filter is loaded with soot, professional cleaning if there is too much soot. Replacement is only needed with a melted, cracked or ash-saturated filter. What matters, though, is fixing the upstream cause (EGR, injectors, journeys that are too short), otherwise it comes back. DPF costs and solutions.
Yes. MasterTuning centres identify the component responsible with real measurements, repair or replace it and recalibrate the software when needed: turbo, injectors, EGR, DPF, AdBlue system, sensors. After the repair we clear the fault and check that it does not come back.
The vehicle database lists, by make, model and engine, stock power and torque and the figures achievable with a MasterTuning remap. The data is indicative and refers to a vehicle in normal maintenance condition: clean filters, efficient turbo and injectors, clutch in good order.
Yes. If you have your own read/write interface you can send us the ECU file and receive the requested modification: Stage 1-2-3, original file reconstruction, checksum calculation and other jobs. Registration to the service is required. Buy files online · original files archive (over 54,000 vehicle/ECU combinations across 176 makes) · MasterTuning File.
